Tablature Fundamentals

Learn how to play guitar using tab. There are a number of methods used to write instructions for playing songs on various instruments. Two simple notations for the guitar are chord diagrams and tablature (tab).

Generally, chord diagrams and tab do not address rhythm. It is assumed that the musician is familiar with the song and can interpret how to play it by using the notations as a guide. Lyrics often provide hints regarding the rhythm.

Tablature shows, which string should be pressed and which fret number. The lines across represent the strings, with the high E string (thinnest) shown at the top. The number in the line tells which fret should be fingered while the string is plucked.

A chord diagram shows which chords should be played along with the lyrics. Sometimes a small bit of tablature showing how to play the chord will be included.
